Fundraising Option -- Each entrant is encouraged to personally raise funds by asking friends and family to sponsor their participation in the Gallop.   Use the attached sponsor form or download a copy at www.setupevents.com .   Our top 3 fundraisers will be recognized with special awards in honor of Tom Farrell, a friend, husband and father who was struck and killed by a vehicle earlier this year while running in a neighborhood.   Start raising those funds in memory of Tom and in support of the Greenways.  Last year’s top fundraiser received a Trek Sole Bike Path bike from East Coasters.

Corporate Challenge :   For 2008, the Gallop 4 the Greenways is adding a corporate competition.  We are going to honor businesses in one of three ways:  Most Employees Participating, Highest Fundraising Total and Greatest Fundraising per Employee.  The corporate competition is not about who runs the fastest, although those individuals will be recognized with great awards.  The corporate challenge is about team work and involvement.  Engage your employees to get active by fundraising as a team and participate in the 5K run or 1-mile walk.  Families are encouraged to participate together and will receive a discount.  Show your support of a healthy workforce by sponsoring a team in the 2008 G4G Corporate Challenge.  If your company is interested in sponsoring and putting together a team, please send an email response to Danielle Rhine at drhi@novozymes.com.  If you know of other companies that are not on this list that may also be interested please feel free to forward this letter.  The more companies involved, the more friendly competition and money raised towards developing the Greenways.  We appreciate your time and hope to see your there.

What Is a Greenway?

A greenway is a protected, vegetated corridor, through an urban or developing area, often providing access to rural countryside.   Most people think of greenways as “linear parks.”   Usually, they include trails extending for miles along lands that typically remain undeveloped, such as stream or river corridors.   Any strip of open land can become a greenway.   Two famous examples of greenways that run through our region are the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Greenway benefits improve the quality of life in a community and translate ultimately into economic viability.   Businesses want to locate in communities their employees like.   Wellness and fitness promotion reduce corporate health costs.   Outdoor recreation facilities draw tourists and tourists spend money.

As the Roanoke Valley develops, it is important that natural resources are protected to buffer effects of urban development.   Greenways are a practical step in achieving sustainable development and are a place where people can enjoy the beauty of nature.
